The Difference Between Brazilian and Bikini Wax

Oftentimes, people mistakenly refer to Brazilian and bikini waxing as the same service. While the general area being waxed is the same, there’s a difference between the services, here at The Wax Room.

We’re here to tell you what you need to know before booking your first Brazilian or bikini waxing session.

What’s the main difference between Brazilian and bikini waxing?

Essentially, the difference between Brazilian and bikini waxing is that Brazilian waxing typically removes all of the pubic hair of your bikini line, pubic area, and butt. Bikini waxing may only remove hair around your bikini line, or the bikini line and the front of your pubic area.

How much does waxing hurt?

Honesty is the best policy and always up front about the pain waxing may cause. However, for most people it’s mild. When you go to a professional esthetician, they use expert technique, experience, and high quality products to minimize the pain you feel. Additionally, when you get waxed regularly, your skin becomes used to the sensation, and you feel less discomfort.

What type of wax is typically used in each session?

The wax used at The Wax Room is a high quality, hypoallergenic hard wax. It is pine rosin free, which gives a velvety feel to it and is extremely flexible. It is free of perfumes and colorants to minimize the chance of that being an irritant. It's low melting point makes for an even more comfortable wax experience and amazing head to toe!

An overview of bikini line, bikini full, and Brazilian waxing

Bikini waxing is a bit more general of a term. It may refer to a couple different services offered by waxing studios. Based on your level of comfort, you may prefer to start with just a bikini line wax to meet your esthetician, and get a feel for waxing.

What is a bikini line wax?

Brazilian wax

Like the name suggests, a bikini line wax removes all the hair around your bikini line. This service is great for beginners to the world of waxing, or for those who want to keep most of their hair while comfortably wearing a bikini in the summertime.

What does a Bikini Full wax consist of?

On the other hand, a full bikini wax removes your bikini line and everything on the front of your pubic area. Similar to a Brazilian, your esthetician offers you the choice to leave a small triangle or landing strip, if you’d like.

The basics of Brazilian waxing

As mentioned, Brazilian waxing usually removes all of your hair. This includes the full genital area, as well as the butt strip. Typically a Brazilain will leave you completely bare, but you can ask your esthetician to leave a strip, if you’d like.

Prep and aftercare for your waxing appointment

Now that you’ve decided on your waxing service, it’s important to know about proper preparation and aftercare. Ample prep makes your appointment go smoothly, and aftercare is essential for preserving smooth, healthy skin.

What should you keep in mind before your appointment?

There are a few things you can do before your waxing session to get ready. Make sure your hair is at least a quarter of an inch long before waxing.

Two days before your scheduled appointment, exfoliate the area that’s going to be waxed. Shower in the morning to open up your pores. Wear loose fitting clothing to your appointment, and avoid caffeine and alcohol for at least 24 hours before. To help reduce discomfort, take Tylenol or Ibuprofen half an hour prior.

How important is aftercare for your waxing experience?

After your first waxing session, your skin is likely to be a bit irritated and red for about 24 hours. Avoid any hot showers or baths, tight clothes, and sun exposure. A non-perfumed moisturizer is recommended, but give it a couple days before exfoliating again. After irritation dies down, exfoliation combined with an ingrown hair serum is vital to keep those pesky ingrown hairs away. Tempting as it may be, don’t shave in between appointments, either.
