How to Prepare For a Leg Waxing Appointment

So, you’re thinking about setting up a wax appointment for your legs, but you’re not sure on how to prepare or what the proper waxing etiquette is? We totally understand and are more than happy to help you out!  Here at The Wax Room, we believe that coming in informed will make your hair removal session a fun and enjoyable one.

Preparing in the days leading up to your leg wax

It’s important to start prepping for your wax a few days out. There are a few things that you should keep in mind before your appointment and a few things that need to transpire before we recommend scheduling your wax. Let’s take a look at what you need to do to make sure that your next waxing appointment is a success!

Grow your leg hair out a bit

We’ve said it once, and you’ll probably hear it a million more times - let your hair grow out! It is crucial for the hair being waxed to have at least a quarter inch of hair growth, but we actually prefer the leg hair to be a bit longer for even better results!

For some this process may be difficult as they prefer to maintain a clean, hair free surface as frequently as possible. Unfortunately, unless your hair is the appropriate length, your esthetician will not be able to wax you. If the hair is too short, the wax fails to bind with the hair follicle resulting in a patchy and uneven wax following your session.

Exfoliate your legs

Almost as important as the length of the hair being waxed is the practice of regularly exfoliating your legs. When you fail to exfoliate on a regular basis, your skin accumulates oils and dead skin cells that can not only make your skin look dull and dry, but also interfere with the wax’s ability to bind with your hair follicles appropriately.

If you’re looking to prep for a waxing session, exfoliate at least 24 hours prior to your appointment – no sooner. Following your waxing session, do not exfoliate for at least two days following your appointment. Exfoliating a few days after your appointment is crucial to avoiding the likelihood of ingrown hair follicles.

Make sure your skin isn’t sunburnt or has open cuts

If you know that you have a waxing appointment in the next few days, it is important to make sure that you avoid sun exposure for long periods of time. If the skin is burnt, your waxing specialist cannot wax you. Additionally, if you notice that you’ve sustained an injury, a large cut, or open wound, you should reschedule your appointment for another time. Hard wax and any other type of hot wax should not be applied to damaged skin.

Schedule your appointment with plenty of time

Lastly, it is important to schedule your waxing appointment in a way that allows plenty of time between any other obligations you may have. Being prepared means mitigating any possibility of feeling rushed. Taking care of your skin is important, and it is crucial to leave enough time for the esthetician to do their job while giving you the appropriate treatments and tips following your session.

What to do the day of your leg waxing appointment

The day of your session should be exciting, not anxiety inducing. Here is what to expect during your waxing session. Remember: if you ever have questions or concerns the day of, please let us know!

Shower in the morning

As a courtesy to your esthetician, as well as an important step in the right direction for the success of your wax, please shower prior to your appointment. When you shower the morning of your appointment, you are removing any residual dirt and body oils that have been allowed to accumulate overnight.

Wear loose-fitting clothing

If you’re not familiar with the process of waxing, you may not know that it is very important to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing to your waxing appointment. Sure, you may want to look and feel confident following your session, but it is crucial for the success of your wax to make sure that you leave the tight fitting, barely breathable fabrics at home.

Tight fitted clothing can cause irritation to the freshly waxed skin and prolong redness/irritation.

Take a painkiller before you go in

Lastly, if you know that you have sensitive skin, are waxing an area with coarse hair, struggle with a low pain tolerance, or just want to avoid as much swelling or discomfort as possible, take a mild painkiller before your appointment. Something like ibuprofen will mitigate any mild discomfort and reduce the amount of time your skin stays red and sensitive. It’s completely normal to take a mild pain reliever!
