Your Complete Guide to Getting a Brazilian Wax

We've all heard about it, seen it talked about on TV and discussed in the latest edition of a magazine – but do we really know what a Brazilian Wax is and all that it comes with? Our goal today is to make sure you have a full understanding of the process, and feel comfortable making your waxing choices.

What is a Brazilian wax?

The short answer: a Brazilian wax includes all the hair front to back. Bikini line, the mound, labia majora and between the cheeks are all waxed.

While the traditional Brazilian removes all hair, our specialists at The Wax Room are more than happy to assist you in customizing your wax to best fit your needs – for example, this can include leaving just a triangle or a strip of hair, often known as a landing strip! We’ll remove as much or as little to fit your needs.

What will a Brazilian waxing appointment include?

Brazilian waxing

During your Brazilian appointment, we will go over what to expect prior to the procedure, during your waxing, and what aftercare is appropriate to make sure your wax turns out perfect.

During your session, a hypoallergenic, high-quality hard wax will be applied to the intended area in order to remove the hair with the hair root with minimal discomfort.

Brazilian waxing vs bikini waxing

Both deal with the pubic hair area, so what's the difference?!  As explained earlier, a Brazilian wax focuses primarily on complete hair removal. A bikini wax focuses on your bikini or underwear lines to make everything look neat and tidy. With a Bikini wax, the rest of your hair remains untouched.

How much does a Brazilian wax cost?

Prices can vary from shop to shop, but The Wax Room charges $55 for a Brazilian Wax.

Preparing for your Brazilian waxing session

To make sure the best results can be obtained, it is recommended that you use a gentle exfoliant on the area a day prior to your service. The exfoliation assists in removing an excess of dead skin cells and oil buildup.

In addition to exfoliation, taking a hot shower prior to your appointment is recommended. The heat opens up your pores, making for a smoother session!

Please refrain from shaving before your waxing sessions. We understand hair growth can be unwelcome, but avoiding shaving is imperative for an even wax.

How long does your hair have to be to wax?

Whether you're waxing your underarms, legs, or sensitive areas, it is always recommended to have a minimum of a quarter inch of hair. This can visually be related to about the size of a grain of rice. Having the proper hair length is crucial for a successful wax. Hairs too short may affect the outcome.

What to do in the days leading up to your wax

In addition to making sure that you exfoliate and bathe, it is also important to get to know your body – everyone is different! Knowing whether you have sensitive skin or if you’re taking medication (like accutane or Retin-A) that may interfere with your waxing appointment is critical. If you have any questions or concerns about these topics, please check out the FAQ section of our website or contact us during business hours.

Steps to take the day of the appointment

The day of! What do we do when the day is finally here? Well, here are three easy steps to follow:

  1. Make sure to wear loose clothing - chafing and rubbing on a newly waxed area is NOT fun!

  2. Avoid caffeine and alcohol the day of your appointment - both can cause the waxed area to be more sensitive.

  3. If you are concerned about pain, make sure to take an aspirin prior to your appointment. This can reduce pain as well as reduce any potential swelling.

What to expect during the wax and aftercare

Let’s jump right into what to expect from your Brazilian wax appointment, and how to care for your skin afterwards the right way.

The steps to a Brazilian wax

Our receptionist will greet you upon check in and show you where the restroom is if you need it. You will hang out in our lobby while your waxer is getting ready for you. Once ready, our waxer will bring you back into a room. They will explain the process of the wax and some key points you could expect. You will be instructed to remove your clothing from the waist down and climb onto the bed. As the waxer begins she will start on the bikini line area and work her way in and finish with the butt strip. Your waxer will be getting to know you during this time as well as offer breathing techniques throughout.

How painful is waxing?

Well, this is a tricky question because everyone’s pain tolerance can differ. At the very least, it is common for everyone to feel at least a warm, spicy sensation after a wax strip is removed. The level of pain can also depend on the sensitivity of your skin and your personal pain tolerance. If pain is a concern, pain relievers like aspirin is a common solution.

Proper Brazilian wax aftercare

After your wax, less is more. Primarily: avoid touching the newly waxed area for at least 24 hours, no matter how soft it may feel or how tempting it may be. In addition, refrain from being intimate, avoid standing water (such as pools and lakes), and sun exposure after a wax.

Finally, to avoid ingrown hairs, utilizing an ingrown hair serum and exfoliating three days after wax, and two to three times a week after that can avoid any unwanted bumps or blemishes!
