Can You Get Waxed On Your Period?
Of all the things you need to take care of during your period, getting waxed might feel like it goes against the grain.
If you have a uterus, you know exactly how tough it can be to peel yourself out of bed during some awful cramps to get some basic tasks done. And in the same breath, sometimes you have to rally – especially if it’s an important appointment, like getting waxed before you head off on a well-deserved vacation.
Preparing for a waxing appointment on your period
Plenty of people wonder whether or not they can get waxed on their period, and the good news is, you totally can. Of course, you may be wondering how your esthetician can effectively wax you without making a mess, risking both parties' safety, and being mindful and gentle throughout – but here at the Wax Room, we make it a priority to serve you from our hearts.
Exfoliate a day before your session
Even though there are some perks to being on your period, like eating an entire ice cream cake in one sitting with zero judgment, there are some minor things that can come up during your cycle that a little extra effort can help.
During your period, you may develop even more ingrown hairs. Since the entire vulvar area is prone to more sensitivity during this time, giving yourself a gentle exfoliation a day before your session can help knock those pesky ingrown hairs loose, making for an even smoother waxing session. It’ll also help the skin around your vagina take full advantage of any skincare products your esthetician applies after your waxing session, such as a cooling moisturizer that helps tame inflammation.
Wear a fresh tampon or menstrual cup
One of the best things you can do for all parties is to make sure you put in a fresh tampon or menstrual cup prior to your appointment. Accidents happen, and we’re simply human, but taking small preventative measures like this can help you and your esthetician have a pleasant experience. Knowing that you’ll be lying down, leak-free can give you peace of mind during your appointment.
Take a painkiller 30 minutes before your appointment
Tylenol is your friend. Since your pubic area tends to be far more sensitive during your period, waxing your pubic hair may feel a little more painful than it normally is. This goes for Brazilians and bikini waxes, but also for any other type of waxing session.
Take a warm bath or shower to open your pores
We know that there are endless benefits to a hot bath, especially when you’re posted up in cramp city. But being strategic about a warm bath just before your appointment is what we call a professional move. This gives your pores a chance to open up and breathe! It unclogs any dead skin cells that may be piling up in one of your hair follicles that would otherwise lead to ingrown hairs.
Tips to help you during your waxing appointment
The reality is that waxing isn’t exactly the most fun thing in the world, and no one gets that more than us. But we can do our best to make sure that your experience, period or not, is a meaningful one. The intention is, of course, to take care of your skin care needs and make sure you feel good doing it!
Your esthetician is there to make you feel welcome and comfortable
Your esthetician at The Wax Room utilizes hard wax during your waxing appointment, which is a bit easier on the skin than soft wax. Letting your esthetician know that you’re co-existing with your menstrual cycle is a great way to ensure that you have all of your needs met, and to help your wax specialist make sure they have exactly what they need to give you an incredible, inclusive experience.
Does being on your period change the waxing experience?
The only thing that changes when you choose to get waxed during your period is the level of awareness your wax specialist has. They will make sure to check in with you, walk you through the process, and ask you to tell them if there’s anything they can help with. There’s no reason to feel worried, embarrassed, or concerned about the way your appointment will go. We are happy that you trust us to make your waxing experience a comfortable one!
Can you reschedule your wax instead?
If you’re feeling extra bad, or just not feeling like getting waxed during your period, you can always reschedule. We’re happy to work with you to change appointment times, given an appropriate heads-up of 24 hours!
