Exfoliate for Brazilian Wax: Before and After

It’s summer and we’re heading outside from sunrise to sunset. If you’re scrubbing and waxing, it’s time to dial in those exfoliation practices. Exfoliation is a buzzword in the skincare industry. No matter what wax center or hair removal expert you’re seeing, knowing how, why, and when to exfoliate is important to get the best results from your waxing experience!

Should you exfoliate before a Brazilian wax?

Brazilian waxes are one of the best things to come out of the 21st century. Yes, we’re totally still riding the adrenaline rush that Roombas & electric bicycles brought us. But really, the chance to be hair free on your terms and not have to worry about your hair growing back faster and thicker is the stuff that dreams are truly made of.

When to exfoliate before Brazilian waxing

Exfoliation is our friend. But, timing and execution are essential. Exfoliate too early and you risk dead skin cells building right back up on your skin. Exfoliate too late and you run the risk of irritation and a potential rash.

Diving into a gentle exfoliation session 24-48 hours prior to your waxing appointment is the perfect sweet spot. It gives your body the exact amount of time it needs to run through its cell cycles, knocks loose any ingrown hairs to be extracted during your waxing session, and leaves skin clean and clear.

The benefits of exfoliating before a Brazilian wax

When you choose to exfoliate you give yourself a prime canvas for pulling those pesky dead skin cells and ingrown hairs out from its root. Smooth skin is your best-case scenario, but your body hair growing back finer and softer over time is another fantastic benefit.

You can exfoliate in a number of ways, including with bikini scrubs (a type of body scrub) and dry brushing. Dry brushing is an alternative form of exfoliation that stimulates your lymphatic system, and increases circulation and energy.

How to exfoliate your bikini area

Would you have guessed that there’s a method to the madness in exfoliation? It seems pretty straightforward, but being well versed in the technique can save you time and money. Less product waste, less time layering or trying to “nail it”. There are a few pro waxing tips and exfoliation pointers to consider.

Methods of exfoliation

Exfoliation typically falls into one of three categories: physical, mechanical, and chemical. You can exfoliate in a number of ways, including with bikini scrubs (a type of body scrub) and dry brushing. Dry brushing is an alternative form of exfoliation that stimulates your lymphatic system and increases circulation and energy.

Exfoliation can also come in the form of actives like lactic acid or beta hydroxy acids. It’s not recommended to exfoliate with acids before your appointment, as a side effect of them includes making your skin a bit more sensitive. Your esthetician will guide you on the best methods of exfoliation for both before and after your waxing session.

The proper steps of bikini area exfoliation

Whatever your method, exfoliating can be an easy process. If you're exfoliating with a scrub, you can scoop up your product and begin scrubbing gently along your bikini line, gentle being the keyword. Too rough, and you'll damage the epidermis or top layer of your skin. The skin around the vagina is already so sensitive, and further inflammation can lead to additional skin concerns. Allow the scrub to sit on your skin for a few minutes, and rinse off as you normally would. Follow up with a moisturizer or fur oil and your skin will thank you.

Other things you should know about exfoliating

We’re not done yet. Getting the information you need to make informed decisions about our wax appointments is non-negotiable. Loading yourself up with the proper knowledge prior to your appointment can keep you safe and make your post brazilian wax experience a successful one.

When should you exfoliate after your Brazilian wax?

After your brazilian wax, you'll want to give your skin 2-3 days to heal and build new, healthy skin on top of the area that was waxed. If you notice hair beginning to grow, it's a good sign to work some exfoliation into your schedule.

How often should you exfoliate after your wax?

During your shower routine, add an exfoliation session every two to three times per week. This will help open your pores and remove excess sebum and dead skin cells. Exfoliation prevents acne, ingrown hairs, and can help your skincare products penetrate deeper into your skin.

The best ingredients for exfoliants

Whether it's pumice, jojoba beads, salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide, all of these ingredients are pillars of a great exfoliating scrub. Look for natural, organic ingredients free of perfume and harmful additives.
